Avianca Pet Policy 2026: Cabin and Hold Limits, Booking Off the Website and Flying a Dog to the US

Last verified against Avianca's official policy: October 11, 2026

Avianca takes dogs and cats up to 10 kg with the carrier in the cabin and up to 70 kg in the hold, and it still flies emotional support dogs. For a US traveler it matters for one more reason: American, JetBlue and Delta all restrict pets on Colombia routes, while Avianca carries them. You can't book the pet on avianca.com, though, and a dog flying into the US from Colombia can only land at four airports. Everything below is checked against Avianca's official pet policy.

What Most Sites Get Wrong

Cabin Rules and Carrier Size

Avianca doesn't publish a per-flight cabin cap [VERIFY: number of cabin pets allowed per Avianca flight]. Space depends on availability, so book early.

Hold Rules and Strong Breeds

Strong breeds

American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Presa Canario, Dobermann, Dogo Argentino, Dogue de Bordeaux, Fila Brasileiro, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler and Japanese Tosa can travel in a metal-walled crate, or in a plastic crate wearing a basket muzzle. A large or aggressive dog needs a wooden or metal crate with two locks on each side of the door.

Snub-nosed breeds

Avianca's current pet page doesn't mention brachycephalic breeds [VERIFY: whether Avianca bars snub-nosed dogs and cats from the hold]. Ask the Contact Center before booking a Pug, French Bulldog or Persian in the hold.

What It Costs

Avianca charges an additional fee for both cabin and hold pets but doesn't list the amounts on its pet page. The Contact Center or travel agency quotes the price when it books the pet [VERIFY: Avianca pet fees for US routes, other international routes and domestic Colombia, cabin and hold].

Budget separately for the paperwork. A dog vaccinated outside the US may need a rabies titer test or a 28-day stay at a CDC-registered facility to enter the US, which can cost more than the flight. For a US dog, the USDA-endorsed certification before departure avoids that.

Where Pets Can't Fly

Flying a Dog to the US

Most of Avianca's network to the US starts in countries on the CDC high-risk list for dog rabies, including Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. Avianca accepts dogs that have been in them in the last six months only to Los Angeles, Miami, New York or Washington. The dog must be at least 6 months old, microchipped before its rabies vaccine and have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The rest depends on where it was vaccinated:

Avianca also asks for the pet's vaccination card and a vet health certificate. Our pet travel to Colombia guide covers the ICA side of the trip, and the entry rules guides cover other countries.

Avianca Pet Policy FAQ

What is the weight limit for pets on Avianca?

10 kg (22 lb) in the cabin and 70 kg (154 lb) in the hold, in both cases including the carrier. In the cabin the pet also can't be taller than 20 cm (about 8 in).

What size carrier does Avianca allow in the cabin?

A flexible carrier up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm (about 21.5 x 13.75 x 9.75 in) that fits under the seat in front of you. It needs ventilation and a waste collection system, and your pet must be able to stand and turn without touching the top or sides.

Can I add a pet to my Avianca booking online?

No. Pets can't be booked on avianca.com. Book through the Avianca Contact Center, a travel agency, an Avianca sales point or the airport, at least 48 hours before departure. Only service dogs can be added online.

Can I fly my dog from Colombia to the US on Avianca?

Yes. Colombia is on the CDC high-risk list, and Avianca accepts these dogs only to Los Angeles, Miami, New York or Washington. A dog vaccinated in the US needs the CDC Dog Import Form receipt and a Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination, endorsed by USDA before it left the US. A dog vaccinated abroad needs a valid rabies titer or a reservation at a CDC-registered facility, among other requirements.

Does Avianca still accept emotional support dogs?

Yes. One emotional support dog per passenger, with a certificate from a mental health professional. Up to 10 kg with the carrier it flies in the cabin; up to 70 kg it flies in the hold.

Where can't I fly a pet on Avianca?

Not in Business Class on the Boeing 787, not to the Galapagos Islands, the United Kingdom, Aruba or Curaçao (except a permanent move to Curaçao with authorization), and not on bookings operated or sold by partner, codeshare or affiliated airlines.

How old does a pet have to be to fly Avianca?

Older than 4 months. On domestic flights within Colombia, older than 2 months with vaccinations appropriate for its age. A dog entering the US must be at least 6 months old.

Compare Pet Policies Before You Book

Avianca is one of the few airlines that flies pets between Colombia and the US, and it takes large dogs in the hold. Cabin limits, hold options, and prices vary a lot between airlines. Compare who will take your pet on your route before you lock in dates.
