Lufthansa Pet Policy 2026: The 8 kg Cabin Limit, Hold Transfers and Flying a Dog to the US

Last verified against Lufthansa's official policy: October 11, 2026

Lufthansa takes small dogs and cats in the cabin if the pet and carrier weigh 8 kg (17.6 lb) or less together, and it flies heavier dogs and cats in the cargo hold on your own flight, something United, American and Delta no longer offer to most passengers. For a US traveler the hard parts are the connection airport, the price you only learn at check-in, and the CDC rules for dogs. Everything below is checked against Lufthansa's official pet policy.

Flying a Dog to the US

Cats aren't covered by the CDC dog rules, but check the import rules of every country you depart from, transit and land in. Our pet entry rules guides cover the paperwork.

You pay at the check-in counter or the Lufthansa service counter at the airport, not when you book. Lufthansa's baggage calculator gives an estimate for your route. A connection in Frankfurt on the way out and back adds $340 in surcharges alone, on top of the base fee, so a nonstop is worth a higher fare.

How to Register and Check In

  1. 1
Pick a routing that works: no Munich connection for a hold pet, and for a dog to the US, one of the approved arrival airports.
  2. 2
Book your ticket, then register the pet at least 72 hours before departure, in My bookings or the registration form. US flights: online form only. Lufthansa confirms availability.
  3. 3
Dog to the US: complete the CDC Dog Import Form and keep the confirmation.
  4. 4
Check in online from 30 hours before departure. With a cabin pet, collect your boarding pass at the check-in counter. With a hold pet, you get it online but can't use self-service bag drop.
  5. 5
At the airport: pay the fee, show the signed printouts (two copies for a cabin pet on a US flight) and the CDC confirmation.

For a dog over 8 kg flying between the US and Europe, Lufthansa is one of the few ways to travel on the same plane as your pet. The trade-off is that you only see the price at the counter.

Lufthansa Pet Policy FAQ

How much does Lufthansa charge to fly a pet?

Lufthansa doesn't publish a flat pet fee. The price depends on the route and, in the hold, on the size of the crate, and you pay it at airport check-in. It is charged once per direction, again for the return, and again for any stopover longer than 24 hours. Hold pets connecting via Frankfurt, Brussels, Geneva, Vienna or Zurich pay an extra $170 (EUR 150).

What is the weight limit for pets in the Lufthansa cabin?

8 kg, about 17.6 lb, for the pet and the carrier together. Only dogs and cats qualify. The carrier can be up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 9 in) and must fit under the seat in front of you. Heavier dogs and cats fly in the cargo hold.

Can I fly my dog from Germany to the US on Lufthansa?

Yes, if the dog is at least 6 months old, you have completed the CDC Dog Import Form, and you land at Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Philadelphia or Washington DC. Newark is also possible if the dog hasn't been in a high-risk rabies country in the six months before entry. Other US airports are air freight only.

Can my pet connect through Munich on Lufthansa?

Not in the cargo hold. Lufthansa accepts no animals in the hold on connecting flights via Munich, and bags can't be checked through there. Through-checking still works via Frankfurt.

Does Lufthansa allow snub-nosed dogs and cats?

Not in the cargo hold. Lufthansa doesn't carry snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds of dogs and cats in the hold. Breeds classified as fighting dogs need special transport containers.

How far ahead do I need to register my pet with Lufthansa?

At least 72 hours before departure online or through a travel agency, or up to 24 hours before through the Service Center. Flights to or from the US must be registered with the online form; the Service Center can't do it. Assistance dogs need 48 hours.

How many pets can I bring on Lufthansa?

Two per passenger. In the cabin, that means two animals of the same species in one carrier, since each passenger gets one carrier. You can also put one in the cabin and one in the hold, or both in the hold.

Every rule on this page was checked against Lufthansa's official pet policy on October 11, 2026. Airlines change pet rules without notice, so check the official page again in the week you fly.

Compare Pet Policies Before You Book

Lufthansa will fly a large dog across the Atlantic in the hold, which most US airlines won't, but the rules shift by route, connection airport and US arrival airport. Compare who will take your pet, and how, before you lock in dates.
